AI Continua / Small Business
Your team is probably using AI already. Let's make that safe and useful.
Plain-language help for small and midsize businesses: find out what AI is in use today, protect your customer and company data, and choose one workflow where AI will actually pay off. No jargon and no transformation programs.
Questions we hear
Start with whichever one sounds like you
"My staff use ChatGPT at work. Is that a problem?"
It can be, depending on what they paste into it. We find out what is in use, what data is going in, and set simple rules your team will follow.
"I don't know where to start."
That is the most common answer we expect to hear. We look at your week, find the two or three tasks most likely to benefit, and leave the rest alone.
"Can I trust what it tells customers?"
Not without limits. We set what AI may answer, what goes to a person, and how you check that it is working.
"I tried it and nothing changed."
Saving an hour of writing is not the same as changing the business. We help you choose something you can measure, such as time, errors or response speed.
"My customers want a real person."
Many do. We build AI around that, handling the background work while people handle relationships.
"Maybe AI isn't for us."
Sometimes that is the right answer. We will tell you if we think so, and show you what to watch for in case it changes.
What the research shows
Using AI is common. Getting value from it safely is not.
Surveys disagree on how many small businesses use AI, from under 20% of all businesses in Census data to over 70% among engaged owners in private surveys, largely because they count different things and ask different people. Across them, the same gaps keep appearing.
"I don't know how, and there is nobody to teach me."
Small business owner, open-ended response, Federal Reserve Small Business Credit Survey
"My business is personal. People want a human."
Small business owner, same survey
"AI feels like it's moving faster than we can keep up."
Owner focus-group participant, ICIC research
"We need support in that sense."

Midsize firms face a related gap: Gartner reports only 30% of cybersecurity leaders at midsize enterprises believe their teams are effective at securing generative AI tools. See sources.
How we help
Three small steps, in this order
You can stop after any step. We confirm scope and price before you commit to anything.
AI readiness and risk check
A short, focused review
We learn what AI your team already uses, what data it touches, and where the real opportunities and risks are.
- Inventory of AI tools in use, including personal accounts
- Review of what customer and company data is exposed
- Two or three workflows worth trying, ranked
- A plain-English summary you can share with your team
AI policy and staff training
Rules people will actually follow
A short acceptable-use policy and hands-on training built around your real tasks.
- What data must never go into AI tools
- Approved tools and how to use them
- Spotting AI-enabled scams, including voice and video impersonation
- Who to ask when something looks wrong
One workflow, done properly
A pilot with a number attached
We pick one task, agree how to measure success, build it with a person in the loop, and compare results with how you work today.
- Clear goal and stop point before we start
- Permissions limited to what the task needs
- A person approves anything customer-facing or financial
- A straight answer on whether it paid off
A newer risk
AI also makes fraud more convincing
Small business training programs now teach owners about cloned voices, fake video calls and realistic phishing emails used to trick staff into sending money. A Massachusetts SBDC webinar on the topic cites one in four small business owners already targeted by AI-driven fraud attempts.
- Payment verification rules: a second check, through a known phone number, for any urgent request to move money or change bank details.
- Staff awareness: short sessions with real examples, not a compliance video.
- Clear escalation: everyone knows who to ask and is encouraged to ask.
How we work with small teams
What to expect from us
Plain language
No acronyms without an explanation, and no slide decks for the sake of it.
Small first steps
One workflow and one policy, with results you can see.
People stay in charge
AI handles background work. Your people own customer relationships and decisions.
Honest answers
If AI is not worth it for something you do, we will say so.
Small business questions
We're small. Is this service too big for us?
The readiness check is designed for teams without an IT department. You do not need any technical staff to take part, only someone who knows how the business runs.
What will it cost?
It depends on the size of your team and what you need, so we confirm scope and price with you after a short conversation, before any work begins.
Will you tell us to stop using the tools our staff like?
No. We start from how your people actually work and aim to make their tools safe, not to ban them. If something carries too much risk, we explain why and suggest an alternative.
Do we need to change our software?
Usually not. We look at what you already pay for, including AI features inside tools you own, before recommending anything new.
We handle regulated data (health, financial, legal). Can you help?
Yes, with care. We can identify where regulated data touches AI and help you set rules. For legal interpretation of HIPAA or other rules, your counsel should confirm.
Will AI replace our employees?
That is not what we design for. Most owners in national surveys see AI as a way to support staff, and our pilots keep a person responsible for outcomes.
